WHAT IS THE GREENHOUSE EFFECT

FACT: The Greenhouse Effect is essential for Life on Earth as we know it.
It is a natural occurrence that maintains Earth's average temperature at approximately 60 degrees Fahrenheit. If the earth's atmosphere did not create this effect the Earth would simply freeze over and life would be difficult and likely impossible to sustain. Here is a simple diagram that illustrates the process. Without this effect the Earth would become an 'Ice Planet'
So to be clear-the greenhouse effect is ESSENTIAL to life on this planet-this is a FACT
This is not in dispute irrespective of the varying views on the reasons for global warming

Greenhouse gases are gases in an atmosphere that absorb and emit radiation within the thermal infrared range. This process is the fundamental cause of the greenhouse effect. Greenhouse gases are essential to the greenhouse effect without which there could be no life on earth as we know it.
The main greenhouse gases in the Earth's atmosphere are
Nitrogen 78%
Oxygen 21%
That's a total of 99%
While both of these gases play important roles in processes that support life in the planet, they have almost no direct role in regulating the climate
This role belongs to the remaining 1%
made up of water vapor, carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide,ozone and halocarbons.
Carbon Dioxide or C02 is not a Pollutant
We'll repeat this for the sake of absolute clarity-CO2 is not a pollutant
All scientists know CO2 is as essential to life as both oxygen and water.
Carbon dioxide is omnipresent and absolutely essential to plant growth. In growing, plants breathe in carbon dioxide, use the carbon portion to build their structure (biomass), and exhale oxygen and water vapor. In turn, animals breathe in oxygen and breathe out carbon dioxide, and carbon dioxide's "circle of life" continues. This is a FACT
Despite this FACT, the USA Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has declared that carbon dioxide is a pollutant.EPA's declaration of carbon dioxide (CO2) as a pollutant makes every animate being on earth not the least of which are humans, a long-term polluter.
What % of Greenhouse Effect of these 1% of Greenhouse Gases is caused by Human Activity

The Earth goes through periods of both warming and cooling-this is a FACT
Global climate cycles of warming and cooling have been a natural phenomena for hundreds of thousands of years. It is unlikely that these cycles of dramatic climate change will stop anytime soon.
Global warming began 18,000 years ago as the earth started warming its way out of the Pleistocene Ice Age, a time when much of North America, Europe, and Asia lay buried under great sheets of glacial ice.

- that Global Warming is caused by rising levels of C02 and causes Climate Change
that is to say that rising C02 is the driver of Climate Change - that Climate Change as a natural phenomenon causes cycles of Global Warming and Cooling
that during times of Global Warming C02 levels rise as a result of a natural process
WHEN DID GLOBAL WARMING BECOME AN INTERNATIONAL POLICY ISSUE ?
A Summary of what these 2 views mean in terms of Global policies
- Man Made Global Warming (referred to as Anthropogenic Global Warming or AGW)
The hypothesis of man-made global warming has existed since the 1880s. Before the 1980s this hypothesis was usually regarded as a curiosity because the nineteenth century calculations indicated that mean global temperature should have risen more than 1°C by 1940, and it had not.
In 1979, Mrs Margaret Thatcher became Prime Minister of the UK, and elevated the hypothesis to the status of a major international policy issue. The UK set this particular ball rolling.
Mrs Thatcher set up The Hadley Centre for Climate Prediction and Research.
In 1988 The IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change) was set up
This was the beginning of the modern age 'Global Warming' scare
(By contrast in the 1970s we had a 'Global Cooling' scare)
The hypothesis is that man-made C02 emissions are responsible for Global Warming
In 1992, Greenpeace International conducted a survey of the world's top 400 climatologists
Only 113 replied. 15% thought it was probable. 32% thought it was possible.47% thought not.

In 1995 an International Symposium on The Greenhouse Controversy was held at Leipzig in Germany. A declaration was made following that conference by a number of climatologists and meteorologists and a variety of scientists.
Here is part of their Declaration as updated in 1997 (Whole declaration HERE)
..we consider the scientific basis of the 1992 Global Climate Treaty to be flawed and its goal to be unrealistic. The policies to implement the Treaty are, as of now, based solely on unproven scientific theories, imperfect computer models -- and the unsupported assumption that catastrophic global warming follows from an increase in greenhouse gases, requiring immediate action. We do not agree. We believe that the dire predictions of a future warming have not been validated by the historic climate record, which appears to be dominated by natural fluctuations, showing both warming and cooling. These predictions are based on nothing more than theoretical models and cannot be relied on to construct far-reaching policies.
As the debate unfolds, it has become increasingly clear that –- contrary to the conventional wisdom -- there does not exist today a general scientific consensus about the importance of greenhouse warming from rising levels of carbon dioxide. In fact, most climate specialists now agree that actual observations from both weather satellites and balloon-borne radiosondes show no current warming whatsoever--in direct contradiction to computer model results.
Historically, climate has always been a factor in human affairs -– with warmer periods, such as the medieval "climate optimum," playing an important role in economic expansion and in the welfare of nations that depend primarily on agriculture. Colder periods have caused crop failures, and led to famines, disease, and other documented human misery. We must, therefore, remain sensitive to any and all human activities that could affect future climate.
However, based on all the evidence available to us, we cannot subscribe to the politically inspired world view that envisages climate catastrophes and calls for hasty actions. For this reason, we consider the drastic emission control policies deriving from the Kyoto conference -- lacking credible support from the underlying science -- to be ill-advised and premature.

THE RELATIONSHIP OF WIND POWER DEVELOPMENT TO GLOBAL WARMING
The almost worldwide political acceptance of the hypothesis of AGW, has led to a variety of efforts and levels of regulation to control man-made C02 emissions; those being regarded as the main culprit.
The C02 emitted by the use of fossil fuels was considered a major factor
Thereby began the rush to develop what are called renewable energy sources in the belief that

ANOTHER CHILD OF THE GLOBAL WARMING SCARE- CARBON OFFSET SCHEMES
In the wake of the concern over man-made Carbon Emissions, thousands of so called Carbon Offset Schemes have sprung up
They basically work like this
You take a return flight from London to Los Angeles
You pay a Carbon Offset Scheme a sum of money to 'compensate' for your portion of the C02 Emission of the flight The money then goes ( after of course the % that it makes for whoever owns the company)
to help something else, such as poorer people in the 3rd World
WHAT IS WRONG WITH THIS PICTURE ?
This (2 above) is such a grim situation that we have devoted an entire separate page to it LINK HERE TO CARBON OFFSET SCAMS
They basically work like this

- It doesn't take the carbon produced by the flight in the first place back out of the atmosphere
- The money you have paid may well be 'helping' farmers in India to use treadle mills
(YES-Treadle Mills) to irrigate their fields rather than supplying them with solar panels or motorised pumps.Whole families in India take turns treadalling away on bamboo treadle mills.
A report produced by one company who run such a scheme actually refers to this as
'A Fairy tale For All' - Not ALL Carbon Offset Schemes do this-some pant more trees for example
